Chaya 10th Year Anniversary Specials

Starting today through October 10, Chaya Brasserie in SF is having a ten-day celebration in honor of their 10th year anniversary. Along with a $20.10 three-course lunch, new dishes and drink specials will be on the menu. Also, I had no idea that the Chaya family had culinary roots that dated back to feudal Japan (390 years!).

I got to try out Executive Chef Tetsuya Osaki's new dishes and I'm pretty amazed at what they're doing. I haven't dined there in over six years and it's wonderful to see them maintaining the same delicious standards on their French-Japanese fusion menu.

Top of the Mark Afternoon Tea

Even for a jaded SF native, sipping herbal tea at the Top of the Mark sky lounge can be a thoroughly relaxing afternoon of girly fun. I was terribly bummed when the Ritz ended their afternoon tea service back in January, so when I was invited to indulge in some pastries at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins I decided to check it out.

Duchess Marden Skin Care

A friend in the beauty industry had pointed me to Duchess Marden, a local skin care company in Marin. Named after founder Marla Steuer's grandmother, this natural skin care line focuses on the healing properties of the rose. Each product is made with plant-based ingredients and contains no parabens, chemical preservatives or petrochemicals.

If you've been waiting for the girly version of Givenchy's Play fragrance, the two versions of Play for Her EDP are now on sale. Made for the woman who is "naturally seductive and ready for life's surprises," this new women's fragrance is dominated by the tropical Tiare flower and Amyris wood. Warm, green notes dance throughout this predominantly floral composition.

Tell Tale Preserve Company Society Bag

Being a fan of William Werner's pastry magic, I can't wait for his Tell Tale Preserve Company patisserie-deli to open later this Fall. For the time being, his new culinary adventure is creating monthly subscription Tell Tale Society bags for the sugar-holics. Each month you'll receive 6-7 sweet and savory goodies from Werner's kitchen. They're now accepting orders for the October bag through this Friday (10/1). Get your order in soon, as the menu looks perfectly delectable!

PRIMAL Napa

Despite the 90-degree weather, hungry carnivores converged at the second annual PRIMAL Napa last Saturday. Held at Chase Cellars (Hayne Vineyard) in St. Helena, meat lovers got to partake in over 2,000 pounds of goat, chicken, lamb, succulent rabbit, beef, and of course, lots of salty pork products.

The VIP tent had a groovy BBQ Oyster (from Hog Island), sausage and bacon bar. One of the favorites was the bacon from Black Pig Meat Co. The bar also served delicate slivers of lamb bacon, which had a slightly tangy flavor.

Guerlain Abeille Royale Youth Serum

If you're in need of a wrinkle fighter, Guerlain just added a new product to their already amazing skin care collection. I'm a honey fiend so I'm pretty smitten with their new Abeille Royale Youth Serum. Designed to help the skin repair its own wrinkles (micro-tears), this serum contains Pure Royal Concentrate, a blend of highly pure Ouessant honey, thyme honey, New Zealand clover honey and French royal jelly. Ouessant honey is produced by the Black Bee, a native to Ouessant Island in Brittany, France.

Lavender Dreams

Many of my friends know that lavender is my favorite scent. I had a local letterpress artist draw one for my business cards and it also played a major role in my old website design. I even sprayed lavender hydrosol on my letters - that's how obsessed I am about this healing plant. I was mulling over all the lavender-based products I've used in the past and wanted to share some that made my all-time favorite list.

Diptyque makes a lovely Feuille de Lavande (Lavender Leaf) room spray. The grassy notes from the leaves make this a more unique blend. Although it's meant to be used as a room scent, I sometimes use it on my linens and even on my hair.

Tarte 10th Anniversary Eco Makeup

Tarte is one eco-friendly makeup line that I can rely on. To celebrate 10 years of green beauty, they launched a stunning gold-studded TEN Limited Edition Collector's Palette for Fall. It's such a bargain at $44 - the retail value is $182. You get ten matte and metallic mineral eyeshadows to blend to your heart's content. The colors are mostly wearable and easy to blend. You can also refill the palette when you finish any of the magnetic eyeshadow pans.

The colors didn't crease and I wore them for over ten hours without primer. Quite impressive. The brush that came with it was really soft but it wasn't easy to use. You can pack the lid with product but I'd use another brush to blend properly. As a bonus, this also comes with a travel size mascara and double-sided eye liner pencil (black/plum). As with the rest of the makeup line, there are no parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, synthetic fragrance, dyes or sulfates in this palette.

To continue with the celebration festivities there is also a TEN Natural Cheek Stain. The bright pink color is very light and natural and I needed about three to four layers before I got the desired shade intensity. It brings out a very pretty glow to the cheeks. This contains a t5 super fruit complex™ (goji, acai, maracuja, acerola and pomegranate) and it's supposed to fight free radical damage with Tarte's proprietary blend of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

The emphasEYES Waterproof Clay Shadow/Liner is just fabulous. It can smudge a bit if you rub your eyes but overall it does a nice job of staying on the eyelid. This contains Amazonian white clay to reduce surface oil and to nourish the skin. It used to be $44 but you can get it for $22. This also comes with a double tipped eye brush/liner. If you don't like using a pot and brush, the intensely pigmented emphasEYES Aqua-gel Eyeliner is also really smooth to apply and is smudge resistant. So easy to glide on - I love the Plum and Green shades.

To follow in the footsteps of the original lip stains, the new LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Stain gives a great matte finish without being heavy or drying the lips. Four new shades are introduced and I got to try Envy, a mauve berry shade. Infused with peppermint and jojoba seed oils, this clinically-proven lip stain will increase moisture content by 6,000% after 28 days.

As for complexion, the Smooth Operator oil-free tinted moisturizer (SPF 20) works well for me. My face didn't get greasy and the color is barely there if you want a really natural look. I veer between shades 10 Conceal and 14 Disguise, depending on how dark my skin gets from the sun. This goes very well with The Eraser 4-in-1 Natural Concealer, which gave decent coverage and didn't crease on my under eye area.

Purchase at Sephora and tartecosmetics.com.
