Heart Wine Bar

There are so many wonderful eateries in San Francisco. It's pretty tough to visit all of them, but I recently got to check out Heart, a neighborhood wine bar and art gallery in the outer Mission district. I also have heard a lot about Kitchenette's great food so I was really looking forward to trying their small plates menu. The communal tables are also a great way to make some new friends.

The wine list changes daily and owner Jeff Segal takes great pride in selecting the wine. He only serves what he personally likes, not what's popular. I love how they serve the wines in mason jars. It makes the whole wine tasting experience way more fun. We got to try the 2008 Pheasant's Tears Rkatsitelli, a Georgian orange wine made in amphora.

Sometimes the food plays second fiddle in a typical wine bar but Kitchenette does an amazing job of matching the wine quality. We loved the creamy, melt-in-your-mouth Scallop Crudo with preserved lemon, fennel oil and chile flakes. The delicious Roasted Potato, Mushroom & Garlic Flatbread was generously sized. You can easily share it with more than two people.

The rich and savory Jasper Hill Clothbound Cheddar & Onion Bread Pudding was so fluffy it was inhaled within minutes. The Marin Sun Farms Beef & Pork Meatballs were just perfect on a cold rainy night. As if we didn't have enough food, we also stuffed ourselves with a slice of the Full Belly Farm Sugar Pie Pumpkin Cake. The best part of the meal? The menu prices won't break the piggy bank at all.

I didn't even know Kitchenette was serving food in a bar like this. I've had the sammies at their take-out window, and they are pretty darn tasty. I'll definitely have to check this place out.

I didn't either but I guess it's their nightly homebase. Now I'm curious about their sandwiches. ;)
Definitely go check it out!
