As much as I love spas, sometimes I can’t help but feel as if I’m on a cattle farm at some of the larger establishments. There’s me and a herd of other white-robed visitors being led from room to room in a fog of water, steam and aromatherapy.
Not so at Preston Wynne in Saratoga. The 28-year-old spa in the heart of this charming, low-key downtown full of restaurants and shops, has a wonderful intimacy about it. The two-story, Spanish-style building with its barrel-tile roof, is smaller and cozier than most spas. Yet you’ll still find 10 treatment rooms here, a three-seat manicure bar, a private pedicure suite for two, and a makeup station for private lessons and custom-blended foundation.

March 1, 2012 Last weekend, I had the honor of participating in the Big Sur Chanterelle Cook-Off Festival. Held at the gorgeous Ventana Inn & Spa and Big Sur Lodge, I was part of the judging panel that had the pleasure of tasting many creative chanterelle dishes. The annual event was also a fundraiser for the Big Sur Health Center.
