Thomas George Estates Guest Houses
If you adore wine country but want something more low key, you should really head over to Healdsburg. The laidback town is far more manageable than its world-famous siblings (hello, Napa and Sonoma) and the wineries are just as amazing. For a relaxing getaway, I recommend the guest houses at Thomas George Estates.
The tranquil property features four renovated guesthouses from the 1920s. Originally built as ranching quarters, the newly remodeled interiors are well appointed and very comfortable. The three-bedroom Pinot Noir house has a hot tub and barbeque grill outside, right near the winery's hen house. If you're planning an intimate wedding in the nearby area this would be a great choice for weekend accommodations.
Chilled wine, organic veggies and fresh eggs welcomed us as we walked into the brand new kitchen. The eggs were gathered that same morning and frankly, they're some of the best eggs I've tried. There was even a bottle of fresh olive oil, made from the property's own olive trees. Talk about hospitality - the lovely folks here know how to pamper you. If you need modern amenities, free wi-fi and cable TV are also available.
As a boutique wine producer that specializes in exceptional Pinot Noir, they also make a fantastic Viognier. We adored the 2009 Thomas George Estates Viognier, Catie’s Corner Vineyard, Russian River Valley ($28). The 2009 Estate Pinot Noir ($40) and the 2009 Chardonnay ($34) are also favorites.
During a tour, we had learned that they harvest their grapes at 2AM in the morning to maintain optimal fermentation. The grapes and its juices are punched down, not crushed. It's quite amazing to see such dedication among the staff members and the youthful energy is impressive.
Their wine cave tasting room is always packed so your best bet is to go in the late mornings. You can also picnic at their fabulous outdoor dining area. If you become a wine club member you'll get a 50% discount on the guest house rentals.
