Kika's Treats Crunchy Caramels
I've been a longtime fan of Kika's Treats. Her fabulously rich and insanely delicious Brazilian honey cakes and caramelized graham crackers are legendary in San Francisco. I was so excited that founder Cristina Arantes had created a new line of caramels so naturally I had to try some.
The Crunchy Caramels ($16, 9 pieces) have a fun little factor. A thin layer of crispy puffed brown rice is hidden within the caramel, so you get a delightful crunch upon first bite. Made with coconut palm sugar and enrobed in dark chocolate, it is finished with a tiny dash of sea salt.
Filled with tons of butterscotch notes, coconut palm sugar is apparently one of the most sustainably harvested sweeteners on the market. It also has a low glycemic index and is high in micronutrients. It almost makes these caramels sorta a guilt-free indulgence, huh?
