Buenos Aires Alfajores
A few years ago, my friend brought me some amazing alfajores from Argentina. I've never had such delicious and authentic ones before and from that moment on I was hooked. I had looked everywhere to replicate these buttery, dulce de leche sandwich cookies and I finally found a great substitute from Buenos Aires Alfajores, a local company in the Bay Area.
Unless I'm going to Buenos Aires right this minute, these rich cookies taste closest to the famous Havanna brand. They're made in small batches by Argentine native Andrea Ozzuna so they're the real deal. You can easily order them online for $22 per box (12 cookies).
Three luscious flavors are available. The regular, rolled with coconut flakes, has a hint of lemon. The chocolate dipped alfajor is pure decadence - it's almost too rich for me. The meringue one is my favorite by far. The thin layer of meringue glaze adds a slight crunch and extra sweetness. It's just so good.
