Shu Uemura Pink Collection & White Recovery EX Instant Spot Brightener

Edgy shu uemura never fails to impress me. The new Pink Collection is yet another fine example. I'm not a pink kinda gal, yet the Gloss Unlimited in PK 378S (Hot Pink Sparkle) charmed my socks off. This collection uses patented Pink Hybrid Pigment technology, ensuring the pure, authentic pink hues.

PinkCollection_shu.jpg

Ditto for the Rouge Unlimited in PK359 Sheer Electric Pink. These colors are really beautiful. Conventional pinks were traditionally created mixing red and white shades, but the shu uemura team came up with a matrix of a mineral core and organic shell. This means the colors are brighter, providing high color fidelity. You just have to try it to see the difference. They are not garish and will work on all skin tones.

PINK_collection_shuuemuraA4.jpg

I paired both of these lip colors with the new Cream Eye Shadow in P Light Green. It was the perfect and easy Spring look for me. These cream shadows come in 9 non-creasing/non-fading and buildable shades (matte and pearl), and they're waterproof for summer! Yay. You can wear alone or layer with their pressed eye shadows.
shu_uemura_creamshadows.jpg

In their skin care department, the new White Recovery EX Instant Spot Brightener does double duty as both makeup highlighter and well, spot brightener. You can get instant dewy skin by dabbing a bit on the nose bridge and cheekbones. Use it alone or over makeup (blend gently). Reducing melanin content by 56% (thank you Sakura Leaf and Prune extracts), this has optical brightening effects and will minimize the appearance of brown spots and acne scars immediately and over time. The convenient brush applicator makes it easy to dab it right you need it. This can last 2-3 months, as a little goes a long way. You can even use it for dark circles!

Juice Beauty USDA Certified Organic Collection

Every day should be Earth Day, and Juice Beauty is one of the natural skin care leaders to promote this idea. Their line of organic body and skin care has always been made without the laundry list of the usual chemicals (no parabens, propylene/butylene glycols, petroleum, sulphates, PEGs, TEA, DEA, phthalates, GMO, silicones, pesticides, etc.). Are you tired yet from reading that list? You don't want all those things on your skin.

I'm happy to learn about their new USDA Certified Organic collection. That means they're using ingredients cultivated from USDA certified Organic farms that maintain soil productivity and control through crop rotation, compost and biological pest control (no synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, livestock feed additives, and GMOs).

juicebeauty_usda_lipmoisture.jpg

This line contains at least 95% organic ingredient content. I really heart the Organic Lip Moisturizer. Shea and cocoa butter provide superb moisture while the intoxicating orange and vanilla make it smell and taste oh-so-loverly. It makes for great extended smooching sessions. This earned a spot inside my daily makeup bag.

The Organic Facial Wash is also an instant fave. Grape and apple juices, sunflower oil, essential fatty acids, and honey maintain optimum moisture levels while helichrysum and carrot seed remove impurities. I like the non-drying texture. It almost feels like a 2-in-1 cleanser and moisturizer.

juicebeauty_usda_wash.jpg

The Organic Facial Moisture Concentrate is pretty potent, so start with a few tiny drops and work it in. This concentrated hydrator will send a boost of antioxidant-rich cranberry seed and grapeseed oils, sunflower, and jojoba. It's also packed with carrot seed, geranium, and helichrysum. Try not to pump out too much lest you waste the precious product.

I'm always harping about SPF protection, so here's another way to protect your precious dermal layer. Not only will you smell like apple pie, the Green Apple SPF 20 Antioxidant Body Moisturizer is non-greasy enough for sports (too bad it's not waterproof). I like to slap it on my arms and legs before my workouts. This is great stuff. This chemical-free spf has enough peptides, DMAE, alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10 and a potent fruit acid complex to brighten and buff off fine lines.

greenapple_bodyspf20.jpg

I'm so proud that they're local yet making such a positive impact globally. Their packaging is made from 100% recycled paper and soy based inks. Over 80% of their products are manufactured in a solar powered plant.

Emilio Pucci Vivara Variazioni

For those who liked Emilio Pucci's original Vivara perfume, the new Vivara Variazioni collection should be a nice addition with some twists. An ode to the Vivara Island, the trio starts off with Sabbia 167, a powdery floral. Tangerine, lemon, Florentine iris, and sandalwood characterize this one. Acqua 330 resembles the coolness of water. Violet lead, jasmine, frangipani, and musk evoke a freshn voyage to the heart of the Mediterranean.

Emilio_Pucci_perfumes.jpg

I liked the Sole 149. An aromatic floral, it aims to recreate the elements of a sun-dappled island. The galbanum channels the original Vivara; this one has notes of tomato leaf, sambac-jasmine, vetiver, and patchouli. I like how vetiver and patchouli warms up the florals.

Weleda New Facial Care Kits & Giveaway!

Long before 'organic' and 'green' became buzz words, Weleda has been an early pioneer in using organic and biodynamic ingredients (since 1921) in their skin care line. Their new Almond and Wild Rose Facial Care Kits ($14.99) are a great way to get into a healthier skin care regimen.

Great as a weekend travel kit, you can experience the wonderful scent of wild roses and almonds. This is also great for a Mother's Day gift (bright idea for you early planners - you can thank me later!). I especially loved the Wild Rose Moisture Cream. Using organic Rosehip Oil (Rosa Moschata), this is light yet nourishing on my dry skin.

Weleda_WildRoseKit.jpg

I also really liked the Body Oil Essentials Kit. You can use the Lavender Oil for aromatherapy, or have your SO rub some Arnica Massage Oil onto your achy back. They even have a great Birch Cellulite Oil. I loved the citrusy Sea Buckthorn Body Oil.

Also check out the natural deodorant sprays. Free of aluminum salts and phalates, these help neutralize odor-causing bacteria and they don't prevent perspiration or the body's natural processes. It has organic grain alcohol cultivated in Italy. The heating and distillation process kills the wheat protein (gluten), so it's gluten-free.

Weleda%20Citrus_Deodorant%20travel.jpg

And, just for this blog, Weleda is very kind enough to do a special giveaway! We're giving away one Facial Care Kit (Rose or Almond) to a lucky reader. FIRST leave a comment on this post, THEN email your full name & mailing address at feteafeteswag@gmail.com. One winner will be chosen at random. Deadline is Thursday, April 2, 11:59pm PST. U.S. residents only. Good luck!

Lutz & Patmos Jane Birkin Collection

SF weather can be super cold and windy even in the Spring and Summer seasons, so imagine my delight to come upon the new Lutz & Patmos Spring 2009 collection. Teaming up with style icon and guest designer Jane Birkin, they created two ultra soft and flattering basic tops (made with 100% organic Scottish cashmere).

jane_birkin.jpg
Jane Birkin for Lutz & Patmos - wearing her V-Neck sweater and Tank.

Layer the Jane Birkin Tank with the V-Neck sweater for that casual, sexy look. The deep V-Neck is raw edged with a slouchy fit and 3/4 sleeves, while the tank scoopneck has a delicate hand crochet finish at the neckline and armhole. Both styles come in black, grey heather, and mocha heather. The company will also continue collaborating with Birkin for Fall 2009.

lutzpatmos_birkin_GREY.jpg

I also want the Organic Flounced Dress - so elegant! It looks deceptively simple but I know it will be very flattering for most body types. It's the perfect black dress with a green agenda.

Recchiuti Easter Chocolate

Ah, springtime...even if you're not religious it's time for you to indulge in Easter treats. Recchiuti Confections has some awesome stuff this season (classic and new) so do treat yourselves to some high octane chocolate goodness.

Those who've tried the Peanut Butter Pucks will be thrilled to see the Peanut Butter Easter Egg incarnation of this to-die-for confection. Dark milk chocolate Easter Egg-shaped shell halves are filled with creamy organic peanut butter, fleur de sel, and chocolate. The tiny bits of salt jumped out ever so slightly, making the peanut butter pop nicely. YUM. These disappeared so fast...and it's not even Easter yet. Oops.

peanutbutter_eggs_recchiuti.jpg

If you're lucky enough to be in the SF Bay Area, I'm begging you to try their new Pastel Hazelnuts. They are so addictive it's insane. Perfectly roasted hazelnuts are panned in burnt caramel, then surrounded by milk chocolate and wrapped in a colorful pastel candy shell. The crunchy exterior texture melded so well with the rich nuts and chocolate. It's not available online so better run down to their store before they sell out!

Kiehl's Weightless Curl-Defining Spray

I am diggin' the lightweight gel texture of Kiehl's new “Weightless” Curl-Defining Spray. Whether you have natural or permed curls, this one is worthy of a try. It gives you the shine, body, and moisture you're craving for.

With this non-greasy styling aid (yay for non-sticky hands!), curl definition is enhanced and frizz is under control. The long-lasting formula ( Sesame Seed Oil, Sunflower Seed Oil, Soybean Oil, Silk Powders, Vitamin E) will strengthen and fortify the hair follicle. It isn't brittle, leaving your mane soft as silk.

Another beauty item I'm keeping an eye out for is their new Marvelous Mineral Mascara. Paraben-free and made with minerals, this is supposed to be great for or sensitive eyes! This I gotta check out...

DL1961 Premium Denim

DL1961 is now one of my favorite stretch denim companies. The first in using the incredible XFit Lycra technology, your jeans won't sag, stretch out, or get baggy. The fabric has 90% less pressure strain at stress points (knees, inseam, and back rise areas), meaning it won't get worn down as easily. The denim moves 360 degrees for maximum shape, style despite multiple wears.

DL1961_MILANO_1O93B.jpg
Milano 1093 Bootcut

Hugging your curves comfortably, these sexy jeans will also shape up the derriere and legs. The four-way stretch fabric in the Milano Bootcut made me look like I've lost a couple pounds, or gotten a mini butt lift. It's that flattering. The slimming effects are evident upon wearing it. So ladies, if you were too afraid to try the skinny or straight cut, this will give you hope. The men will notice the difference, I kid you not.

Tory1098_straight.jpg
Tory 1098 Straight Leg

The 27% lycra content makes this line super comfy, it's almost like wearing yoga pants. I don't recommend working out in these but it's thin and soft enough to lounge around in if you want. I might have to try it out on the dance floor for the ultimate stretch test. And, they use an enzyme wash (using a protein that softens the fabric) for that worn in look. I wonder if the traditional stone wash beats up the fabric too much in the process?

They will launch an organic line next month, so stay tuned. I'll update you on the new styles and washes.

I totally heart these guys. Keep up the fabulous work!

Cupcake Kit

I think it's safe to say that almost everyone loves cupcakes. The new Cupcake Kit (Chronicle Books) includes 250 adorable cupcake liners (mini and regular sizes, in seven colors/patterns!), a reusable pastry bag with assorted piping tips, and a recipe book from noted cookbook author Elinor Klivans.

It's also great as a gift idea for the aspiring baker in your life. For about $20, you can get everything you need to get started. It's a fun and recession-friendly way to entertain and thrill friends and guests. A total bargain for the kitchen.

Cupcake_Kit.JPG

The lovely booklet has 14 yummy recipes for year-round entertaining, as well as tips on ingredients, icing, and storage. Try your hand at making the pretty Chocolate Butterfly Cupcakes. Got a wedding reception? No problem. Whip up some Rose Petal Wedding Cupcakes. The White Christmas Cupcakes look so good I might make them now.

And check out the cute Coconut Nests recipe below! It's sure to make you smile.

Once you get the hang of it, get the matching companion The Cupcake Deck. The recipe cards are a great way to get more baking inspiration.

Coconut Nests

Makes 12 medium cupcakes

These whimsical cupcakes are just right for Easter or any spring celebration. Pastel-colored jelly beans tucked into a coconut nest top the cupcakes, but small candy eggs or other pastel candies could also be used.

Cupcakes

1 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
¾ cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup buttermilk (any fat content)

coconut_nests.jpg
Coconut Nests

Frosting

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups powdered sugar
2 cups shredded sweetened coconut
36 jelly beans, pastel-colored

Position a rack in the middle of the oven. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line 12 muffin tin cups with paper cupcake liners.

Make the cupcakes. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt into a medium bowl and set aside.

In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on medium speed, beat the butter and sugar until smoothly blended and lightened in color, about 1 minute. Stop the mixer an scrape the sides of the bowl as needed during mixing. Add the eggs one at a time, beating until each is blended into the batter and it looks creamy, about 1 minute. Mix in the vanilla. On low speed, add half of the flour mixture, mixing just to incorporate it. Mix in the buttermilk and blend in. Mix the remaining flour mixture until it is incorporated and the batter looks smooth.

Fill each paper liner with a scant ¼ cup of batter (an ice cream scoop works well), to about ½ inch below the top of the liner. Bake just until the tops feel firm and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 18 minutes. The cupcakes will rise just above the paper liners. Cool the cupcakes for 10 minutes in the pan or on a wire rack. Remove them from the pan onto a wire rack and let cool completely.

Make the frosting. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer on low speed, beat the butter, cream cheese, and vanilla until smooth and thoroughly blended, about 1 minute. Stop the mixer and scrape the sides of the bowl as needed during mixing. Add the powdered sugar, mixing until smooth, about 1 minute, then beat on medium speed for 1 minute to lighten the frosting further.

Use a small spatula to spread about 3 tablespoons of frosting evenly over the top of each cupcake. Sprinkle the coconut generously over the frosting, leaving a small space in the center of the frosting of each cupcake uncovered (or lightly covered). Arrange 3 jelly beans in the center of the frosting to resemble eggs in a nest. Serve, or cover and refrigerate. The cupcakes can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Ineeka

I think Ineeka teas have some of the best beverage packaging I've seen in recent memory. Their unique brew tache is an open infusion system that opens up to spread across a mug. It makes clean up very easy, that's for sure. No more straining or having messy loose tea leaves stuck on the tea pot. Just pour hot water, brew for a few minutes, toss the brew tache, and enjoy. Their sleek tins are also reusable and recyclable.

machai_ineeka.jpg

Their 100% organic teas are cultivated on their own family farms in the Himalayas (all 15,000 acres of it). Their fair trade and biodynamic practices help preserve their locally self-sustaining communities and eco-system.

I liked the Ma-Chai tea. A recipe from the Ineeka family, the warm ginger, cardamom, and black pepper really stood out in the brew. It's perfect for a gentle wake me up in the afternoons when you need an energy boost. I also liked the regular mint tea.

Larkspur & Hawk

It seems like my list of things to covet is never-ending. Now I have to add Larkspur & Hawk's Small Anne Day/Night Earrings to the list. Inspired by a Queen Anne earring design, these gorgeous earrings are made of faceted white topaz stones, then backed with leaf foil in a 14k gold setting. The drops are removable for a day look, and you can wear them for an evening look. (Also available in white topaz with indigo foil; citrine with fuchsia foil; white topaz with scarlet foil)

larkspur_hawk_green_earrings.jpganne_earrings2.jpg

And how fantastic is this antique Chrysolite Cluster Ring (circa 1780)?? Wow. I so am drooling over this. Très élégante. Chrysolite was mined in Brazil in the 18th century and the popular stones are still sought after in modern times. I dunno about you, but I'd take this over any regular diamond ring. I just love color that dazzles the eye.

The Grace Earrings are another favorite of mine...simply stunning. You can get this in rose quartz with indigo foil or green amethyst and leaf foil.

TCHO Drinking Chocolate

At last, TCHO has introduced their version of drinking chocolate. Fans of this hip chocolate line will enjoy the strong blend of three of TCHO's chocolates: “Chocolatey” from Ghana, “Citrus” from Madagascar, and “Nutty” from Peru. There are no added ingredients so it's pure liquid chocolate.

Drinking_Choc_TCHO.jpg

Used for hot and cold drinks, you can make a TCHOspresso (add to hot water in a demitasse), an IcedTCHO, or a TCHOlatte.

Or...if you're very impatient like me (and in dire need of a choco fix right this instant), you can also eat it straight from the tin with a spoon. It's that yummy.

I need a TCHOspresso now.

Lipstick Queen Illusion Gloss and Interview with Poppy King

If lip plumpers are not your thing, you can still get full, beautiful lips without the sting! Poppy King, the glorious dame behind Lipstick Queen, just launched her new Big Bang Theory - Illusion Gloss collection. She came up with the perfect formula of shimmer and shine to make your lips really dazzle. The 11 gram container is one of the larger glosses I've seen, so it really is a whole lotta big plumpin' bang for your buck. The colors are highly pigmented so it will go a super long way.

lipstickqueen_bigbang.jpg

This is a very pretty line and it's available in eight shades. I loved Energy a lot (shimmery bright cherry red). Those who want a more dramatic lip will love Black Hole (deep wine). I only needed a couple teensy dabs as it was so pigmented. If you are into lighter shades, Time is a nice shimmery golden nude. Creation (rose) and Cosmos (ruby) look so darn pretty. And, if your color bleeds no matter what you do, I recommend the Invisible Liner. The self sharpening mechanical pencil is so convenient.

I also liked the Oxymoron Matte Gloss in Honest Politician. As a 2-in-1, it goes on nicely as a creme blush and lip gloss. The brown-pink matte tone was very neutral looking on my lips, and I needed only a tiny dab for my cheeks. Very high mileage in this product. The recessionista in me approves.

The stylish Ms. Poppy was darling enough to share her revered lipstick advice in a recent interview. Read on for her expert tips on choosing the best lip color for your skin tone, how to prevent bleeding, and more:

poppy_king.jpg

What's the easiest way to prevent lipstick bleeding? Dark colors, especially red, can be tricky to maintain throughout the day for busy career gals.

Poppy King: Wear a lip liner that matches the lip color exactly so that the line is seamless.....or, if you don't like lip liner you can use concealer around the line of the lip to stop bleeding. Lipstick Queen Invisible Liner stops lipstick bleeding without being seen.

What red shades do you recommend for women of color? With so many brands out there, it can be overwhelming.

PK: The bluer based/pinkish reds tend to look best on deep skins such as Latin and African American....the more orange reds look tend to look best on Asian women.

On top of the new Illusion Gloss, what else is coming up for the brand that we can look forward to?

PK: I am having a glossy year with new and unusual forms, textures and concepts in gloss. Expect the unexpected....even a gloss you can sharpen!

lipstick_queen_BigBang.jpg

Any tips on how to maintain soft lips (to maximize lipstick application)? Does exfoliation help?

PK: Exfoliation and Chapstick are the best to maintain lips without getting greasy. I use a spare toothbrush to exfoliate lips.

Red is your signature color. Do you have other favorite colors you wear on 'off days' or at home lounging around?

PK: Red is my boring look in that I wear it all the time.....I feel radical when I wear other shades. I love wearing Coral and Rose from my line in both the Saint and Sinner formulas. I love romantic shades for my time off red.

Who was your biggest influence on your personal style? Why?

PK: My godmother, who owns an amazing fashion boutique in Melbourne (where I am from). She introduced me to leopard print and I have pretty much worn it since I can remember. I love glamour.

Do you ever recommend the nude lip on certain women? Or just red all the way?

PK: I recommend colors I truly think would suit someone's style and personality. I believe the two are intrinsic to each other and I read someone's whole "aura" when I recommend lips shades. A long way of saying yes.....I recommend nude all the time when I think it suits someone's being.

And there you have it! Lots of fab beauty ideas and concepts to absorb. Big Bang Theory - Illusion Gloss is available at Barneys New York stores, Space NK, Henri Bendel and online at lipstickqueen.com.

The Perfect Puree of Napa Valley

I'm so happy that the Perfect Purée of Napa Valley has finally launched a retail line. Now home chefs can use the same premium fruit purees and concentrates used by top culinary professionals and mixologists! These gourmet flavorings (all natural, no colorings or preservatives - yay) will add sparkle to your entertaining plans, from spicing up your cocktails to adding oomph to your desserts.

puree.jpg

The retail line is available in the following flavors: Mango, Prickly Pear, Raspberry, Strawberry, and White Peach (Concentrates: Blood Orange, Passion Fruit, Pomegranate). I LOVED the Mango puree. It's a great blend of varieties from Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, Philippines, Peru, and India. I made a mango panna cotta last weekend and everyone inhaled the dessert in minutes. Yep, it was that good. Get the Mango Panna Cotta recipe here or see below. The White Peach is so delicate and refreshing - perfect for Bellinis and other fun drinks. I will try the Grilled Prawn Cocktail recipe soon.

Huge Lips Skinny Hips

Think you can have Angelina Jolie lips and a svelte physique at the same time? The new Huge Lips Skinny Hips lip glosses might help you reach your goals. Created by beauty insider Karen Robinovitz, this line a multi-tasking girl's best friend. They're supposed to help reduce your appetite (contains Hoodia Gordoni extract) and give you plumper lips (thanks to Vitamin B3).

huge_lips_skinny_hips_purple_lab.jpg

Named after Christian Louboutin, I liked the shade Red Sole a lot. For a lip gloss this had strong color payoff and didn't dry my lips. I'm happy to find that this lip plumper works and it doesn't sting (has soothing Lemon Peel oil). I even wiped the gloss off to see what would happen and my lips stayed plump for a while. Neat-o! This will be a staple for my cosmetics bag whenever I need that sultry look.

As for the appetite suppressant part, I'd need to check the scale in a couple weeks to see if my derriere shrunk a bit in my tight jeans...

FIEL shoes

I can't get enough of FIEL. These comfy and elegant flip flops are made for traipsing around white sandy beaches. So dainty and feminine, I can see myself getting a bunch of these for trips to Koh Samui or to Rio.

FIEL_palawan_gold.jpg
Palawan in gold

Made in Brazil, these flip flops come in three styles. The Palawan is adorned with a gorgeous leather flower (in black, gold, and pewter). You can adjust the flexible petals (with wire backing) to your liking. Each flip flop also contains a real lab-grown sapphire! This is taking eco-glam to the next level.

I also love the Sula style. Bring out your inner Roman goddess with the long straps, or transform yourself into a ballerina. The memory foam insole will add more comfort as you spend all day playing outside.

Two Lovers

I saw "Two Lovers" last night, this film got me excited about American cinema again. A love triangle story is hardly original, but the stars (Joaquin Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Vinessa Shaw) and director James Gray make it work. Phoenix does a superb job of putting his vulnerable side out there as Leonard, the charming and broken guy who gets into trouble with two very different women. The emotions are genuine, and you really do feel it whether he's deeply in love or in suffering from pain, even if they happen within a matter of hours.

two_lovers.jpg

You'll also enjoy Isabella Rossellini's turn at playing the protective Jewish mom. She completes the picture of the suffocating life that Leonard (Phoenix) is desperate to escape.

I adored the strong storytelling. Each shot is filmed with purpose and nothing is gratuitous. Even the spare use of music is brilliant, drawing emotional resonance from the audience. This is how movies should be made.

paltrow_twolovers.jpg

I had thought this would be one of those sappy downer films, but there are a lot of sweet moments that find parallels from real life, drawing you further into this messy drama. This is how life is, mixed with lots of good, bad, and the sorta-OK stuff in between.

FatCat Scones

On top of afternoon tea, I'm a scone addict. I've tried all sorts - the drier kind, the really moist cake-like kind, and the authentic British version. I have to say FatCat Scones has the best of both worlds in terms of texture and taste. While diehards might argue it isn't the real proper English scone, one bite of these fluffy jewels and you'll be a convert.
fatcat_MandarinOrangeCranberry.jpg

One of the great things is that they're so easy to bake. Just pop a few onto a baking sheet for 15 minutes (no need to defrost), drizzle on the terrific thawed icing and you can have friends over for tea and gossip in no time flat. It's super moist and tender! My faves are Peach Passion Fruit (wowed me lots, hands down the top fave), Mandarin Orange Cranberry, and Lemon Drop (lovely citrus flavor). They also have a great Ginger Twinkle frozen cookie dough.

fatcat_logo.jpg

Unlike most supermarket brands, these have no trans fat and are free of preservatives, which is always a good thing. I sure appreciate any health factor that will ease my guilt as I gobble these up. Yum...I can inhale a couple of these at a time.

Style Inspiration from Oscars Screen Sirens

The excitement may be over from this year's Oscars, but the styles from the lovely celebs will stay in our minds for a long time. Here's a few of our faves:

Vive La France! Marion Cotillard has always been a favorite of mine, even before she got internationally recognized for "La Vie En Rose." She totally nailed it with elegant drama without going over the top with Dior. Stunning, deceptively simple, yet classy - everything I adore about French couture. Oh, how I love her and her style.

    marion-cotillard.jpg

Here's what Stevie, of LA-Story.com had to say about Cotillard's ensemble: I find this outfit intriguing. I wasn't hot for it right off-- but then when I took a good look at the entire ensemble, what's not to like? . The deep color is so very flattering for her and the shape of the dress creates a very retro-glam 1950's glamour that's dramatic and works for her. Unlike others who went strapless, , she wore a necklace which creates interest and leads the eye to Cotillard's face. Love the ring she has on -- it's stunning!

Penelope Cruz was totally channeling Audrey Helpburn in this Balmain vintage outfit. It was sweetly romantic and charming without overdoing it like Sarah Jessica Parker. Love it. White is not my favorite color (and some though it was too princess bride) but she pulled it off nicely a la Roman Holiday.
    penelope-cruz.jpg

Stevie: I like the essence of the dress. It's much like the black one she wore at the BAFTAS and while it works a la Audrey Hepburn, the lack of color just drains the life out of her. Make this red, deep rose, burgundy, deep forest green, any range of blue hues and this would be a smashing dress. Penelope, I think you got just a bit tired towards the end. The bag doesn't work with the dress. If you are going to pull off that dress, then carry a vintage style bag too.

Nicole Kidman had the classic, ethereal, 'very Nicole' style in L'Wren Scott. She looked very retro-glam in this one, and I approve heartily. It's like a beautiful ice goddess came down upon earth to bestow her beauty for us to enjoy...

    nicole-kidman-2009.jpg

Here's Stevie's take: Gorgeous dress with unique detailing at the bodice. It's really eye-catching. Would have loved to have seen it created in a different, richer color as this almost matches Kidman's skin tone. Her hairstyle is amazing and opens up her neckline which made it an ideal opportunity to wear a fabulous-- yet delicate-- necklace to work with those earrings and either a ring or a couple of sleek thin bangle bracelets.

Taraji P. Henson was also sporting the sweet and innocent feel with her choice of Roberto Cavalli. I like the simple chic in this one. Good move overall, even if it's a bit too bridal looking.
    taraji-p-henson.jpg

Gorgeous dress on Taraji. I think she was truly one of the best dressed with an edgy design that flattered her body and made her truly a star on the red carpet. The color was perfect with her skintone!
    Stevie, LA-Story.com

Leslie Mann had an incredible hot-mama Pamela Roland gown on. Smokin' diva! I hope to be this hottie hot when I get to her age...it draped on her body so nicely without baring too much flesh.
    leslie-mann.jpg

Stevie says: Pamela Roland should be so happy to have this dress on Leslie Mann and vice versa. It's stunning on Mann because the design skims her body perfectly. The dress is killer, smokin', sexy-hot and without showing off a lot of skin either. No mean feat that.

I wish everyone had made the right choices. I really love Beyonce, but man, this House of Deréon dress made
her look like a cartoon character. I dig her lovely curves but this matronly design exaggerated the hips which is not what we want. The severe bustline is not flattering to her voluptuous figure.
    beyonce.jpg

Stevie's take: Typically Beyonce "wows" you on the red carpet, but this dress makes a statement in all the wrong ways: too big on the hips, the retro-hemline, the overwhelming pattern, the top makes her look like a Barbie doll or Jessica Rabbit (my apologies to Jessica Rabbit for the comparison). This dress should teach Beyonce that you should not dump the kitchen sink of design elements into one dress. Plus what's with the lack of jewelry?

    Recchiuti Malted Chocolate Chip Cookie

When I have some more time to bake, I'd love to compare my own version of malted mint chocolate chip cookies with Recchiuti Confections's version. For the foodies, here's the Recchiuti version below for your baking pleasure:

    MALTED CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES

This variation on a popular classic is an example of how to make a good thing even better. Ice cold milk or vanilla ice cream are perfect accompaniments.

    Yield: ~3 dozen cookies

    recchiuti_malt_choco_cookies.JPG

    2 ¼ cups (335g) unbleached all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon kosher salt
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 extra-large egg
1 tablespoon (15g) heavy whipping cream
    1 tablespoon (30g) unhopped
    barley-malt syrup
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract, preferably Madagascar Bourbon
½ pound (226g) unsalted butter, at room temperature
¾ cups (150g) granulated cane sugar
¾ cups (150g) dark brown cane sugar
    3 tablespoons (25g) malt powder
12 ounces Recchiuti Dark Hot Chocolate pistoles

    MAKE THE COOKIES

    • Preheat the oven to 365°F. Line the bottoms of two 12-by-18 inch sheets pans with
    parchment paper.
    • Sift the flour, salt and baking soda together into a bowl. Set aside.
    • In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, heavy cream, malt syrup and vanilla. Set
    aside.
    • Put the butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat
on medium speed to soften. Beat in sugar, brown sugar and malt powder and continue
to mix until light and fluffy. Gradually add the egg mixture, allowing the mixture to
    fully incorporate before adding more.
    • Switch the mixer to low speed and add the flour mixture all at once. Mix until almost
fully incorporated. Fold in the chocolate pistoles.
    • Spoon about two tablespoons of dough per cookie onto the prepared pans, spacing 3
    inches apart.
    • Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 10-12 minutes, rotating the pans 180
degrees after 5 minutes. The cookies should be brown around the edges and a lighter
brown in the center. For a crispier cookie, bake for an additional 1-2 minutes.
    • Let cool completely on the pans in wire racks.
    • Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week.

Enjoy! If you decide to use this recipe, let me know how it went in the comments area. To print your recipe, go here: http://www.recchiuti.com/recipe_detail.html?recipe=36

    Maia Hirasawa

Indie music lovers take note. I adore the "And I Found This Boy" video by Maia Hirasawa. Her heartfelt vocals and honest lyrics are part of the reason why I'm intrigued with Though, I'm Just Me (Thrive Records), her US album debut.

She is a great example of just diving into truthful songwriting and jamming out good, classic tunes. She also arranged, produced, and recorded all her music. And she played most of the instruments. What a multi-talented Swedish tour de force.

    Ciao Bella

The work day is not over and I'm already craving the new Ciao Bella flavors. They made their official debut at the Fancy Food Show back in January but I was too busy running around tasting too many things.
    maltball.jpg
    Malted Milk Ball

Luckily I got a chance to sample the Malted Milk Ball and Mango Banana sorbet at my leisure and I'm very happy to report that they are both winners in my book. I love the buttery flavor of malt in the first place so it's a done deal when the crunchy bits of malted chocolate balls and malted cream melted all over my happy tongue. I tell ya, it took some restraint not to devour the entire pint.

The Banana Mango is the perfect tropical blend of ripe Ecuadorian bananas and sweet Alphonso mangoes. So refreshing! The Chocolate Jalapeno, which I didn't try, is a West African chocolate mixed with jalapeño slices. Talk about having some heat for dessert.

I think I still have some of their awesome Dulce de Leche left....time for a gelato break now!

    Vouelle

I'm madly in love with Vouelle, the new French luxury shoe label. The brand recently launched their bridal collection last Fall in Paris (too lovely for words), and the Spring 2009 women's cocktail collection will take the fashion world by storm. Adorned with exotic feathers, Swarovski crystals, and silk satin, these sexy and elegant shoes make me want to hop on the next plane to Paris and raid their showroom. One look at the flirty and feminine Andy shoe (silk satin with handmade satin flower) and you'll know what I mean.

    vouelle_Andy.jpg
    Vouelle's Andy cocktail sandal

Co-founder Melissa Regan de Vogele was having a tough time finding her dream bridal slippers, so she tapped her friend and Creative Director Michelle Boor to come up with some ideas. Soon enough, Vouelle was born. It also helped that Boor earned her design chops from Guy Laroche and Theory.

    Grace_Black.jpg

I also love the darling Carla with a sculptural black organza loop and beige feathers (named after Carla Bruni perhaps?). So very vintage inspired, so very sexy...this is so perfect for any vintage Dior suit or YSL dress.

The seductive Dana is very come-hither with its feathers fanning out the pump’s side seam. The Eva, however, is the showstopper must-have for any femme fatale's collection.

If you're in Paris, lucky you. The bridal collection can be found at Galleries Lafayette and Printemps. For those who live outside France, not to worry. You can order the Spring 2009 Cocktail Collection directly with their Paris showroom (they do ship and accept all major credit cards). They plan to retail their Fall 2009 collection in the U.S. soon, so stay tuned!
