Juice Beauty

I've written about Juice Beauty a while back, when the company first launched, but now I got to try other items that escaped my notice. The Green Apple Mousse Body Cleanser makes your morning shower extra fun. Not only does it smell like a scrumptious apple pie, it comes in a foaming dispenser. This is great for all the sleepyheads who are too tired to lather their soap. And, it's paraben free!

juice%20beauty.jpg

For a perfect pucker, the Lip Plumper does the trick. It does fill in the fine lines with its effective amino acids, cane sugar, and organic citrus juice. It has a permanent place in my purse. For newbies to the brand, the Organics To Go kit is good for folks who are undecided on what to try; it's also a nice gift for a skin care junkie.

PHILIP B.

PHILIP B. has some great hair care. The Scent of Santa Fe Balancing Shampoo is gentle enough for most types, including colored hair. Blending Shea Butter with 10% plant extracts of Piñon, Sage and Juniper Berry, it helps balance out an oily scalp and conditions a dry one. You can even use it as a body wash - great to take along for travel. The Deep-Conditioning Creme Rinse is a nice follow up to fight off the split ends.

philip%20B%20gel.jpeg

Their Styling Gel is pretty light (no stiff locks here) - ideal for volumizing and texture building. Extracts of Irish Moss and Anori help increase moisture to allow increased light reflection. That means soft hair and no flaking! The hold lasts fairly long and creates a natural sheen. For modern cuts, the Shin-Aid Pomade helps structured styles stay put all day. It has a nice matte texture that looks super polished.

Erin Gallagher

I ran across Erin Gallagher's jewelry via The Daily Obsession, and I'm drooling over some pieces. I'm keeping an eye on the Valerie earrings. These mysterious black sapphire cascade earrings will complete your I'm-too-sexy date outfit for sure. The Amelia necklace (whiskey citrine and green garnet) is so darn gorgeous.

erin%20gallagher%20black%20sapphire.jpg

For those on a budget, fret not. There are pieces under $100, so you don't have to splurge big time for a sparkly bauble. You can even custom design your own jewelry online!

Angelina Jolie Style

Angelina Jolie's fashion sense has grown classier as her acting matures. Here's a couple examples of her understated yet elegant style:

Kiehl's Forest Rain Collection

Kiehl's has a new unisex Forest Rain fragrance. Inspired by the original “Kiehl Pharmacy” essence collection, it is a spicy blend of Muguet, Vetiver, Citrus, Cedar Wood, and Musk.

kiehls%20Forest%20Rain.JPG

It is cruetly-free (not derived from nor tested on animals) and you can also layer it with the Forest Rain Liquid Body Cleanser and Hand and Body Lotion. It's a very fresh scent, not too overwhelmingly woodsy. Great for a fall scent!

479º Popcorn

I love gourmet popcorn, but 479º Popcorn really takes it to the next level. Based in SF, founder Jean Arnold makes these lovely organic snacks in small batches to ensure absolute freshness. Named after the perfect popping temperature, this line is after flavor precision.

popcorn.jpg

For spice lovers, The Globetrotter sampler is a treasure trove of taste bud tinglers. Each flavor is well balanced between sweet and savory, tinged with a warm spice. Both Chipotle Caramel + Almonds and Madras Coconut Curry + Cashew create a lazy warmth that's perfect for cozy movies nights. The Ginger Sesame Caramel has a fragrant aroma, and Pimentón de La Vera has the strongest kick of the bunch.

479%20globetrotter%20popcorn.jpg

Purists can lust after the Alderwood Smoked Sea Salt, or the Vietnamese Cinnamon Sugar. I happen to like bold flavors so I'm sticking to The Globetrotter.

The packaging is quite beautiful. Each box has a different colorful pattern and a sassy quote on the side. I got a kick out of the one from the Black Truffle + Aged White Cheddar box: "Somewhere far far away, an Italian nonna is urging you to eat the whole box." And I sure did eat away, bit by bit.

479%20ginger%20sesame%20popcorn.jpg

I also dig the green biz practices of Arnold's venture. She only sources ingredients from local producers that practice sustainable farming, and composts everything.

Scharffen Berger Finisterra

A tribute to cacao farmers, the Scharffen Berger Finisterra (Limited Series #10) is a 72% bittersweet bar. Made in honor of the company's 10th year anniversary, the beans are sourced from Venezuela, Trinidad, and Madagascar. The name is Latin for "land's end," symbolic of their search for the world's best cacao. The bar is quite commendable - it contains strong fruity notes of citrus and berry, mild acidity, and a nice smooth finish.

chocolate%20Finisterra%20Bar.jpg

As a gift idea, the Folio Box with the 5 gram tasting squares is a neat one (you can insert your calling card on the front - how clever), or get the Hand Dipped Glace Apricots. Using their signature 70% bittersweet chocolate, these imported Australian apricots are very moist and flavorful. Recipients of these treats will be very happy.

Chesapeake Bay Candle

The holidays are coming up, and I'm starting to make my humble abode cozy with Chesapeake Bay Candle's Harvest Collection. The Textured Glass Reed Diffuser in Cinnamon Plum has a scrumptious scent that is really potent. Combining notes of orange peel, red plum, crushed nutmeg, and grated cinnamon, it creates the warm holiday feeling that I so crave. You can scent up a big living room with this bottle.

The Seventh Daughter

For authentic Northern Chinese cuisine, Cecilia Chiang's The Seventh Daughter has a solid collection of classic dishes that's worth keeping in any kitchen. Amidst a backdrop of her adventurous escape from Japan-occupied Shanghai to settling in San Francisco, the culinary pioneer presents her life story that's filled with extraordinary stories of courage, determination, and of course, food.

Celebrated by the likes of Julia Child, Alice Waters, and Chuck Williams, Chiang's repertoire is showcased in recipes such as the beloved Sichuan Dan Dan Mian, Tea-Smoked Game Hens, or the Red-Cooked Pork. Check out the Clams in Black Bean Sauce recipe below. It's one of my favorite Cantonese dishes.

seventh%20daughter.jpg

Clams in Black Bean Sauce (dou chi chao xian)

Serves 6 to 8 as part of a Chinese meal and 4 to 6 as a Western-style entrée

11/4 pounds small Manila clams
1/4 cup fermented black beans
3 tablespoons Shaoxing wine
2 tablespoons soy sauce
11/2 tablespoons oyster sauce
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Pinch of kosher salt
3 chopped garlic cloves
1 tablespoon peeled, minced fresh ginger
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground white pepper, for finishing
1/4 cup thinly sliced green onions, green part only, for garnish

seventh%20daugher%20black%20bean%20sauce%20clams.jpg

Swish the clams in a large bowl of cold water to clean them. Drain well and set aside.

In a small bowl, generously cover the black beans with cold water and soak until soft, about 10 minutes. Drain the beans, rinsing off any excess salt, and squeeze until dry. Set aside.

To make the sauce, whisk together the wine, soy sauce, and oyster sauce in a small bowl and set aside.

Heat a large wok over high heat until a bead of water dances on the surface and then evaporates. Add the oil and a pinch of salt and swirl to coat the pan. Add the garlic, ginger, and reserved black beans, and stir constantly to coat in the oil for 30 seconds. Toss in the clams and cook 30 seconds. Pour in the sauce and cook, stirring and tossing constantly, until the clams open, 1 to 2 minutes. Sprinkle with the white pepper and green onions and quickly remove from the heat.

Turn the clams out onto a serving platter and serve immediately.

Armani Beauty Fall 2008

Giorgio Armani Beauty has some awesome fall items, and here are a few highlights:

lip%20wax%20armani.jpg

For a casual pout, the Lip Wax is a modern satiny blush for lips. A combination of a gloss and a lipstick, this super smooth and silky wax is so light I can hardly feel it. Just dab it on and off you go. No need for lip liner, but feel free to add some gloss to make it pop. The beauty of this line is that you can mix and layer to your liking. I like shades 3 (Sienna) and 4 (Raspberry).

LIP_WAX.jpg

From the Python Collection, the Blending Blush Duo palettes have a creamy texture to create a soft and subtle highlighting.

armani%20blush%20duo.jpg

The Maestro Eye Shadow Quads are inspired by the rich colors of the Italian coast. These range from matte greys and navy to sumptuous lilac and gold. The new formula contains light Micro-fil™ silk so it literally melts into the skin for layering ease and comfort. Pigments are intensified and it has improved crease-proof adherence. The Desert palette # 5 features a pretty rose, earth brown, burnt beige, and pale sand; the Mineral # 6 has amethyst, grey obsidian, rose quartz, and beige opal.

armani%20maestro%20eye%20quad.jpg

With cooler weather upon us, the Crema Nera cream is a wonderful option for dry skin. The obsidian mineral (extracted from the petrified lava on Pantelleria, Italy) formula has cell regenerating properties to revitalize the skin's natural radiance. It's a bit rich, so use a tiny bit and build up if you need more.

armani%20crema%20nera.jpg

Finally, if you haven't tried the fantastic Face Fabric Second Skin Nude Makeup, you're totally missing out. The nine shades are more like tinted moisturizers, and can be combined together to customize your look. It's like you're not wearing any makeup - it literally blends into the skin. I don't wear much foundation so this is a nice basic look for me to polish up; no caked up texture here!

Coco-Luxe Caramels

Coco-luxe Confections just launched their new Caramel Collection, and this lucky cat got to taste it. The soft Butterscotch Caramels are made with local butter and a sprinkling of Sonoma Gourmet Salt. This one's the most delicate in flavor out of the bunch.

cocoluxe%20caramels.jpg

The Pralines were inspired by Southern Pralines, and the brown sugar melds sooo nicely with the Alaea Hawaiian salt. Mmmmmh...The Shoo Fly Pie Caramels are quite rich and dark. My favorite of the trio, these are made with black strap molasses (yum!) and are paired with the delicious Salish Smoked Salt. My taste buds are in heaven.

Available in 3, 9 and 36 piece boxes - you can buy online at Coco-luxe.com, or at the Coco-luxe Boutique & Hot Cocoa Bar in SF.

Kika's Treats

Oh...my. I've reached chocolate nirvana with Kika's Treats.

Founder Cristina Besher nailed her baking recipes down for sure. For those who are curious, 'Kika' is her nickname, hence the brand's namesake. Besher only uses local and organic ingredients (no trans fat, no GMOs or preservatives) so the shelf life is fairly short. Not that it really matters, since you'll inhale these babies in 2 seconds flat!

kika%27s%20honey%20cakes.jpg

I really dug the Brazilian Honey Cakes. This fancy version of "pao de mel" (honey bread) is a rich spiced honey cake enrobed in dark Guittard chocolate. Absolute heaven!

kika%27s%20caramelized%20graham.jpg

I'd be in so much trouble if I had these treats around me all the time. The Caramelized Graham Crackers are just as deadly (enrobed in dark or milk chocolate). I've never tasted such delicious graham crackers in my life, other than the ones from Recchiuti's S'mores Bites.

The flavorful Cocoa Nib Chocolate Shortbread has nice crunchy bits of nibs nestled within the light buttery goodness. The Espresso Cardamom Shortbread has a unique and delicate zing. The cardamom is not too strong, which I like.

Very, very addictive treats, so you are forewarned.

Meet shu uemura's Gina Brooke!

I'm really excited to be meeting shu uemura Artistic Director Gina Brooke at the Nov. 1 Atelier Artist event. Beauty junkies should really attend this master class. In this exclusive in-store appearance, Gina will share her celebrity makeup tips and tricks of the trade (she's worked on Madonna, Eva Longoria, Naomi Campbell, Giselle Bundchen, Cindy Crawford, and David Beckham).

This is a great opportunity to learn fabulous makeup techniques for holiday parties! To get an idea on how wonderful this event will be, check out her tips on getting Madonna's Stick and Sweet concert tour look:

gina%20brooke.jpg

STEP 1: Prepare the face
“Beautiful makeup starts with skin.” Prep eyes with the DEPSEA MOISTURE REPLENISHING EYE MASK (to calm puffiness and hydrate). Apply PHYTO BLACK LIFT FIRMING ANTI-WRINKLE CREAM on the whole face. Lastly, apply FACE ARCHITECT REMODELING CREAM FOUNDATION beginning at the arch of your brow down to the middle of your eye, directly onto the middle of the cheekbone. Each time the sun reflects off your skin, it will create the illusion of glowing, dewy, healthy, radiant skin!

STEP 2: Prime the eyelids
Using a KOLINSKY BRUSH 11, apply PRESSED EYE SHADOW in M BEIGE 800 above the eyelids. Blend PRESSED EYE SHADOW IN ME BLACK 990 onto eyelids. Then, use COVER CRAYON in 9YR LIGHT in the inner corner and water line of the eyes to make them appear larger. Madonna is known for her liquid black eyeliner, so for this look, she wears it very dramatically. I apply LIQUID EYELINER at the top and bottom of the eyes as well as on the lid, drawing small lines, almost like scratches, that create an optical illusion of a blackout when blended into the ME BLACK 990 eye shadow. It’s all about the eyes!

Madonna%20shu%20uemura%20chart.jpg

STEP 3: Prep the lashes
Use the EYELASH CURLER before applying ULTIMATE EXPRESSION MASCARA beginning at the base and rolling the brush through the tips of lashes. Now here’s the trick to make eyes pop – interweave two pairs of FALSE EYELASHES S217 to create an atmosphere of black around the eye.

STEP 4: Finish off with the lips
Since the focus is on the eyes, use ROUGE UNLIMITED in BG 949 layered with GLOSS UNLIMITED in BG 930N for a soft, natural look.

shu uemura Tokyo Lash Bar 2008

The shu uemura Tokyo Lash Bar 2008 collection is chock full of style for all sorts of occasions. Lots of Halloween and holiday inspired looks here! These are really innovative false eyelashes. Thinking they were too wild for my tastes, I didn't think I can wear some of the designs. But, they sure look great on my peepers!

shu%20uemura%2008%20lash.jpg

These hand-made lashes are really high quality. If you're careful enough they will last through several wearings. Check out some of the nine new limited edition styles:

The Black Gown is quite elegant, with scalloped black lace to cast a mysterious Victorian drama to your makeup. The Premium Velvet Feather in dark green/black is inspired by the 2007 design (personally chosen by Mr. Uemura). It's ultra glam and flirty!

shu%20uemura%20velvet_feather.jpg

I like the Mini Indigo - it's a mixture of indigo blue, sandy yellow, and black. Very playful and fun, it's cute for daytime looks, and great for those who are starting to learn lash application.

shu%20uemura%20mini_indigo.jpg

I LOVE the Dazzing Sapphire. It's so beautiful. It's my new lash favorite. These are jeweled with dark blue Swarovski crystals with a mixture of black and blue hairs. Another fun variation is the Dazzing Topaz (classical tanned-color Swarovski crystals with brown hairs).
dazzling_sapphire.jpg

The Color Stitch is quite funky and cool. They feature eye line accents (“faux eyeliner”) in yellow, blue and green fabric. I liked the Retro Graphic with eye line accents in black and white that extend through the temple.

The Flip Color has contrasting colors on the top (black) and bottom (orange). Talk about hot views from both sides...

Bols Genever

The predecessor to gin, Bols Genever is the classic white spirit for cocktails. Inspired by the original 1820 recipe, it is touted as the world’s most authentic spirit. Containing 50% maltwine, it has a very rich and smooth flavor. In its modern re-birth, this was actually awarded the AOC status (Appellation d’Origine Controllée), and that's pretty impressive in my book.

Bols%20Genever%20bottle.jpg

An essential cocktail ingredient for nearly two centuries, Genever was featured in the Jerry Thomas's “The Bartender’s Guide” (world’s first cocktail book). I adore the artisan care of the brand's font design - it's an authentic Amsterdam handwritten typography. The smoked glass bottle is also very elegant.

Try the following recipes:

The Holland House

Glass: A small pre-chilled martini-cocktail glass.

Ingredients:

1¾ shots of Bols Genever
¾ shot of Noilly Prat dry vermouth
½ shot of freshly squeezed lemon juice
¼ shot of maraschino liqueur

Technique: Shake the ingredients with large, hard, cold ice cubes and double-strain into the glass.

Garnish: Spray and rim a zest of lemon.

(This strong, dry, complex cocktail was the signature drink of the Holland House, once one of New York’s finest cocktail bars.)

HOLLAND%20HOUSE.jpg

The Collins

Glass: A large long-drink (Collins) glass.

Ingredients:

2 shots of Bols Genever
1 shot of freshly squeezed lemon juice
½ shot of rich sugar syrup (2 parts sugar: 1 part water)
soda water.

Technique: Shake the Bols Genever, lemon juice and sugar syrup with large, hard, cold ice cubes, double-strain into an ice-filled Collins glass and top with soda water.

Garnish: A lemon wedge, dropped in but not squeezed.

(The original Collins was made with genever, not gin; genever brings a pleasant depth and slight fruitiness to the Collins.)

Givenchy Beauty Fall 08

The Pocket Beauty Case from Givenchy's Fall 2008 collection is a must have. The limited-edition item is a natural pink baume encased in a men's pocket watch, making for a very cool accessory (clip on pants or purse). Used for the lips and cheeks, the very sheer color is great for that delicate flush whenever you need it. It can be built upon as a day to evening look, depending on how much you apply. It can even be added to the chest/shoulders for a radiant glow. How's that for multi-purpose? Gotta love it.

John Masters Organics

The John Masters Organics Vitamin C Anti-Aging Face Serum does a pretty good job of controlling the wrinkles. It's also great for all the sun damage I've been subjecting my skin to. I need to slather this on all the time. You can use it throughout the day, and also at night in place of heavy creams.

john%20masters%20vit%20c%20serum.jpg

I also liked the Blood Orange & Vanilla Body Wash. It's got a nice thick texture, so a little bit is enough to form a rich lather. It won't strip the body of its oils thanks to its mild botanical surfactants. The bourbon vanilla scent is lovely.

Muito Fina

I found this lovely online boutique called Muito Fina, and it has the most darling things to lust after. I'm putting the Yoana Baraschi Left Bank Portrait Jacket on my wish list for sure. Structured yet feminine, the cute pleats on the front pockets are so cute. Being the practical gal, I like the light tropical viscose for year-round versatility.

The Bianca Nero Silk Charmeuse Bubble Mini is one I'd love for upcoming holiday parties. The embroidered flowers are so pretty. No wonder Hollywood starlets are wearing this designer's frocks. So romantic and chic!

To celebrate Muito Fina's first year anniversary, use the promo code (ONEYEAR20) for a 20% discount! Not a bad deal at all.

Think Pink!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and fellow blog goddess Stella from Well Above Average has posted a fab blog on all the goodies you can get to support this great cause. I totally dig the Smashbox Pink Power eye & lip kit. Another excuse to reap more karma points and play with more makeup...
